DEPRESSION THERAPY  ·  CORONADO, CA

Depression is highly treatable and seeking therapeutic support is the first step.

Depression doesn't always look the way people expect. Sometimes it shows up as a visible sadness or an inability to get out of bed but may times the signs can be quieter: a flatness where emotion used to be, a creeping exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix, a disconnection from things that used to matter. Many adults navigating depression appear to be functioning fine on the outside but are carrying something heavy on the inside.

High-functioning depression is real, and it often goes unaddressed for a long time precisely because everything looks okay from the outside. If you've been telling yourself you don't have a reason to feel this way — that's often one of the first signs it's time to talk to someone.

OUR APPROACH TO DEPRESSION TREATMENT

We take a depth-oriented, integrative approach to depression — which means we're interested not just in reducing symptoms, but in understanding what the depression is responding to.

Depression is often the psyche's response to something: unprocessed grief, relational wounds that were never tended to, a life that has drifted away from what genuinely matters, or a nervous system that has been under chronic stress. When we understand what the depression is carrying, treatment becomes more than management — it becomes an opportunity for real change.

Depending on your history and what's most relevant for you, treatment may draw from:

  • Psychodynamic and depth-oriented therapy — to explore the underlying experiences, patterns, and unconscious dynamics that contribute to depression

  • Attachment-based work — to address relational wounds and loneliness that often sit at the heart of depressive experience

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — to identify and challenge the negative thought patterns and behavioral withdrawal that sustain low mood

  • EMDR — where depression is connected to specific adverse experiences, losses, or traumatic memories

  • Somatic approaches — to work with depression at the level of the body, not just the mind

We also work collaboratively with psychiatrists and prescribers when medication is part of the picture. We don't prescribe, but we do believe in integrated care.

A sense of disconnection from joy, motivation, and yourself.

Depression is not a character flaw or a sign of weakness. It's a clinical condition with real neurological and psychological dimensions. It's also, very often, a meaningful signal that something in your life, your history, or your relational world needs attention.

Common presentations we work with include:

  • Persistent low mood, sadness, or a sense of hopelessness that doesn't lift

  • Emotional numbness or flatness — not feeling much of anything

  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities that used to feel meaningful

  • Fatigue and low energy even after adequate sleep

  • Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or feeling motivated

  • Irritability, restlessness, or a low threshold for frustration

  • Withdrawal from relationships, even when isolation makes things worse

  • Negative self-talk, self-criticism, or a persistent sense of inadequacy

  • Depression connected to grief, loss, major life transitions, or trauma history

"Depression isn’t always caused by one clear moment. More often, it’s the result of a mind that has adapted to stress, loss, or overwhelm in ways that make it hard to feel, hope, or engage — and therapy helps create space for something different to emerge."

OUR APPROACH

We don't start with a protocol.
We start with you.

At True North Clinical Counseling, our approach to trauma is careful, paced, and deeply relational. We don't move straight to processing. We begin by building the safety and internal resources that make healing possible — because those foundations aren't prerequisites you arrive with, they're something we build together. From there, we work at a pace that is always yours to set.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

CBT helps identify the thought patterns that amplify anxiety — catastrophizing, threat overestimation, all-or-nothing thinking — and builds practical skills to interrupt them. Within a trauma-informed framework, we also trace where those patterns originally came from.

Somatic & Mindfulness-Based

For many people, anxiety lives in the body first. Somatic approaches and mindfulness practices teach you to notice what's happening internally without being swept away by it — building genuine regulatory capacity, not just coping skills.

Attachment-Based Relational Work

Chronic anxiety is often rooted in early relational experiences. Attachment-based therapy addresses those roots — not to revisit the past endlessly, but to understand how it organized the nervous system and to build something genuinely different.

EMDR

Where anxiety is connected to specific traumatic experiences or memories, EMDR helps the brain complete the processing that trauma interrupted — so the memory becomes something that happened, rather than something still happening now.

DEPRESSION IN THE CORONADO COMMUNITY

In any community, depression can touch anyone.

In a community like Coronado — high-achieving, outwardly successful, with a strong military presence — depression can be particularly hard to name and seek help for. The cultural expectation of competence, resilience, and composure doesn't leave much room for admitting you're struggling.

Military-connected individuals face additional layers: the moral injury of service, the identity loss that can accompany transition out of the military, the particular kind of grief that comes with losing teammates, deployments, and a sense of clear purpose. These deserve direct, informed care.

Whatever has brought you here — you don't have to keep managing it alone.

THE IMPACT OF UNTREATED DEPRESSION

Untreated depression doesn’t just affect the individual—it can disrupt family relationships, contribute to withdrawal or conflict, and place significant emotional and caregiving demands on loved ones. Seeking support is often an act of care for those you care about.
